French Immersion Programs
Programs offered by English-speaking school districts to promote official bilingualism in Canada through the provision of education programs in French for non-Francophone students. During the first years, instruction of the basic curriculum is conducted entirely in French. Once a firm base in French has been established, instruction in English language arts is added, and instruction in the English language gradually increases. Students generally continue to receive instruction in certain subjects in French so that by the end of secondary school proficiency is achieved in both languages.
